Metaphysics and Science

The Specialized Licentiate in Metaphysics and Science aims to prepare professors and scholars who are able to address—in their teaching and in more diverse cultural settings—the problems of: Theoretical philosophy, particularly metaphysics and epistemology; philosophy of religion; the interaction between science and philosophical knowledge; and the relationship between faith and reason.

The specialization in Metaphysics and Science offers a profound, integral reflection on the question of God in relation to different forms of rationality. The radical problem of human thought, that is, the ultimate foundation of reality, is addressed through the search for a metaphysical intelligibility that finds in God the ultimate answer. However, far from locking itself into an isolated system, it must address the various forms of scientific, philosophical, hermeneutical, and sapiential rationality. Thus, it sets out to explore—and bring to fruition—the need to "broaden the horizons of rationality." The study of classical philosophical thought, beginning with Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, is based on the analysis of the great contemporary authors and mainstream writing that has rigorously explored the search for truth.

The specialized courses in Metaphysics and Science are organized around eight basic thematic areas: 1) The metaphysics of being; 2) Metaphysics and contemporary thought; 3) Philosophy of God; 4) Religion, secularization, and atheism; 5) Knowledge and thought; 6) The forms of rationality; 7) Scientific knowledge; 8) The physical world and life.
