At the present time, when so-called “fake news” and “post-truth” appear to dominate the public debate, restrictions on freedom of expression have begun to be proposed. In some countries, the Christian message itself has also been subject to severe limitations, ranging from subtle censorship, through manipulated debates, to open persecution.

The 11th Professional Seminar for Church Communication Offices aims to initiate a discussion about the true nature of freedom of expression in the public sphere in today’s hyper-connected society. Ecclesiastical communications offices have the task of contributing to the free and reliable flow of information, which is an indispensable service to society.

We need to resolve our differences through forms of dialogue which help us grow in understanding and mutual respect. A culture of encounter demands that we be ready not only to give, but also to receive. Media can help us greatly in this” (Message of Pope Francis for the 48th World Communications Day, 2014).

The conference will take place on three thematic levels: the first one will explore the theoretical framework for the discussion; the second will analyse the dynamics of today’s media environment; the third will study specific cases: practical realization of a truly free and proactive debate.
