School of Theology

Teologia

In the context of the pluralism of modern cultures, the School of Theology offers a program of formation marked by a strong Christocentrism, an orientation based on the conviction that a deep knowledge of the mystery of Christ is the perennial foundation for the transformation of human beings and the world.

The School’s formative agenda in both the educational and research levels is translated into the following choices of method and content:

  • A presentation of the intrinsic connection between the revealed truths as expression of the mystery of the Trinity and of its communication of love in Christ;

  • The mystery of the whole Christ, Head and Body, as the deep foundation of the essentially ecclesial character of any theological reflection–communion with the Church, with her doctrine, tradition, liturgy etc., is a necessary premise to any pursuit of theological knowledge of Revelation;

  • The intimate connection between the divinity and humanity of Christ as the light by which one understands the relation between faith and reason, both in theology and in one’s worldview, consequently deepening the meaning of created realities and their autonomy, and giving rise to a spirit of openness to a peaceful encounter with the natural, historical and social sciences;

  • The call to holiness, rooted in Baptism, and further diversified according to the various charisms and vocations in the Church, as a background to a more coherent vision of the theological and ethical dimensions of Christian existence.

  • Il lavoro della Facoltà si struttura in base ad un Istituto di Liturgia e a cinque Specializzazioni:  Teologia dogmatica, Teologia morale, Teologia spirituale, Teologia biblica e Storia della Chiesa.

On Monday, June 5, 2023, Rev. Prof. Philip Goyret, current Dean of the School of Theology, was elected President of the Committee of Deans and Principals of the Roman Theological Faculties. Currently, the committee is comprised of 19 academic institutions.

A few weeks ago, the Joan Baptista Torelló Research Group in Psychology and Spiritual Life was established by the School of Theology’s Department of Spiritual Theology. The personal archive of the scholar, who taught for many years for the department, is on its way from Vienna.

The new Torelló Center’s mission is to deepen the relationship between psychology and spirituality, from an interdisciplinary perspective. The archive’s organization will begin in the coming months, supervised by historian José María López-Barajas, who spent long periods with the Spanish priest, theologian, neurologist, and psychiatrist. Among the archived material are unpublished manuscripts and copious correspondence.

On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, (4 p.m., Álvaro del Portillo Lecture Hall) there was the presentation of the book Indigenous People and Christians? The Dialogue between Evangelization and Indigenous Cultures in Latin America (15th-18th Centuries), published by TAU Editrice and written by Prof. Luis Martínez Ferrer, Professor of Modern and Contemporary Church History at our university.

The event’s speakers were María Pilar Martino, from the Complutense University of Madrid, and Saqijix López Ixcoy, from the Rafael Landívar University in Guatemala. They spoke with the author about the theme of language as a factor in intercultural dialogue between Christians and indigenous people.

The new semi-annual issue (36, No. 2 - 2022) of Annales Theologici, the international journal published by the School of Theology, on the theme The Synodality of the Church was recently  published.

This edition delves deeper into the topic in a systematic and didactic way, and offers an excellent opportunity for reflection in light of the upcoming General Assembly of Synods 2023-2024.
