Interdisciplinary Documentation Center for Science and Faith

Disf

The Interdisciplinary Documentation Center of Science and Faith (DISF) is an interdisciplinary center for research and formation

In 2002, foundation of the DISF was laid with the publication of the Dictionary of Interdisciplinary Documentation of Science and Faith. At the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, after about 15 years in the making, the Center for Research and Formation, the portals disf.org and inters.org, and the Higher International School for Interdisciplinary Research (SISRI) were founded.

The main purpose of the DISF Research Center’s studies and initiatives is to increase the philosophical-humanistic formation of those working in the field of scientific research—young graduates, researchers, and scholars, who wish to enrich their studies or professional experience with a broader interdisciplinary framework—keeping in mind the philosophical foundations of the different disciplines, as well as the Christian Revelation.

Generally speaking, the research center's initiatives are intended to bring to fruition a more developed fusion of faith and reason in all those engaged in intellectual work and research. The center’s work is directed at scholars who have different philosophical or religious perspectives, as long as they are interested in the role the Judeo-Christian tradition of thought plays in the formation of Western culture.

The DISF Research Center is financially supported by the Italian Bishops' Conference (fondi 8xmille alla Chiesa cattolica)

Report 2022-2023

Sezione:

In evidenza

From October 4th  2023 to January 17th 2024

The course intends:

a) to examine those contemporary scientific results and perspectives that seem to challenge our religious and theological worldview

b) to show the significance of the discourse on God in scientific culture.

The faith in God the creator of heaven and earth and the Christian proclamation of the Incarnation of the Word are assessed against the background of our knowledge of the physical cosmos, and of the evolutionary history of life and humankind on earth.

The course includes both an epistemological perspective – preliminary to the dialogue between science, philosophy and theology – and a historical perspective highlighting how those three fields of knowledge have interacted reciprocally.

On Tuesday, May 30, 2023, (4:15 p.m., Álvaro del Portillo Lecture Hall), in light of the publication of the monographic notebook titled "Creativity: artificial, animal and human intelligence" (1/2023), the Acta Philosophica Review – in collaboration with the School of Philosophy and the DISF Research Center – organized an afternoon conference entitled Creativity, Culture, Imagination: At the Heart of the Human.

Rev. Prof. Rafael A. Martínez, director of Acta Philosophica, made the opening remarks.

On Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28, 2023 (at the Centro Convegni Bonus Pastor, located at Via Aurelia 208, Rome), the 14th Workshop of the Scuola Internazionale Superiore per la Ricerca Interdisciplinare (SISRI) will be held, entitled "Ends of Research and the Search for Meaning. Interdisciplinary Reflections on Freedom."

The event will begin Saturday with a lecture by prof. Stefano Oliva (DISF Research Center) entitled “Freedom and Truth: The Personal Character of Research.” In the afternoon, prof. Elena Colombetti (Extraordinary Professor of Applied Ethics in the School of Philosophy) will give a lecture entitled “The Need for Freedom. Questions, Fears, and Challenges in the Human Being.”

Saturday, March 11 and Saturday, March 18, 2023: training for high school teachers. For more information, view the event poster.
