Towards a Definition of Musical Liturgical Theology (MLT).
Epistemology and developmental paths

Music is something that seeps through the fingers. That is why it easily escapes theological studies. However, when music embraces its liturgical essence, it manifests the Mystery inherent in the liturgy, beckoning us to encounter the Lord at the very heart of each celebration with an unprecedented depth, akin to the realms of transfiguration.

In this Workshop, Musical Liturgical Theology (MLT) is presented. It is a new branch of Theology, a proposal that aims to accompany liturgical music in its depth, in its height and in its life. In its depth, because it is a theology of foundations; in its height, because it accompanies music in its flight towards the fullness of the Logos; in its life, because it is able to tune in with the dialogue between God and man, proper of the liturgy, without confining it but enhancing it. MLT is alive, a theology made from the experience of lived liturgy. As Liturgical Theology, it seeks to grasp the spark of Christ who encounters us in every celebration. Moreover, it is a Liturgical Theology that incorporates the methodologies of music and Musicology, so that this element of the liturgy we call music ceases slipping away, becomes familiar and allows the faithful to engage in ever-deepening participation in every celebration.

MLT is Theology, not Musicology. Yet, it is a Theology that incorporates Philosophy, Music, and Musicology into its methodology.

MLT serves the faithful because familiarity with liturgical music broadens the possibilities for true participation.

MLT constitutes a fruitful guide for the composition of liturgical music in every age and culture. Therefore, it serves contemporary composition and inculturation.

MLT serves as a guiding principle for chapel masters, choir directors, and musicians, assisting them in selecting appropriate repertoire and musical performances for each celebration and even for specific moments within each celebration.
