In memoriam Mass for Prof. Gaetano Lo Castro (February 29, 2024, at 7:00 pm)
The School of Canon Law of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross wishes to remember Professor Gaetano Lo Castro with a Mass for the repose of his soul, on the occasion of his thirtieth anniversary, on February 29th, at 7:00 PM, in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare (located at Piazza di Sant'Apollinare in Rome). Those who wish to concelebrate are kindly requested to send a message to fpuig [at] pusc.it.
On January 29, 2024, Professor Gaetano Lo Castro passed away in Catania after several months of illness. He was a visiting scholar at the School of Canon Law continuously since 1985 and an emeritus professor of Canon Law and Ecclesiastical Law at the University of Rome "La Sapienza."
Professor Lo Castro provided an "irreplaceable, constant, and discreet contribution to the development of our School," as acknowledged in 2012 by the then Dean of the School of Canon Law and current Rector, Luis Navarro, during the presentation of Lo Castro's Trilogy, "Il mistero del diritto," at the Holy Cross. The professor played a crucial role in the growth of the Schools through "numerous discussions to evaluate conference projects, special courses, seminars for professors," as well as providing qualified support in launching the journal "Ius Ecclesiae" in 1989 with the publisher Giuffrè. He also actively participated in the editorial committee meetings."
Originally from Caltagirone (CT), born in 1940, he served as the director of various national research projects and coordinated Doctoral programs at the University of Rome "La Sapienza." Author of several specialized publications, in the case of the Holy Cross, he also contributed to the training of young professors in Canon Law.
In October 2021, Professor Lo Castro delivered a presentation at the launch of the volume Studi sul diritto del governo e dell’organizzazione della Chiesa on the occasion of the 70th birthday of Monsignor Juan Ignacio Arrieta, in the presence, among others, of the Cardinal Secretary of State.
"The passing of this great jurist and canonist leaves a void in the field of Canon Law," commented Rector Luis Navarro. "I am grateful for his contribution to deepening the roots of Canon Law in the mystery of the Church and its foundation on the dignity of man, surpassing a positivist view of law in the Church and society."
