"Tolkien: the relevance of the myth", the 8th "Poetics & Christianity" Conference, on 18 and 19 April
On April 18th and 19th, 2024 (at 8:45 am, in the Aula Magna Giovanni Paolo II), the Conference "Tolkien: The Relevance of Myth" was held, organized by the International Study Forum "Poetics & Christianity" of the School of Communication.
The organizers wrote: "The fiftieth anniversary of the death of J.R.R. Tolkien urges us to reflect not only on the importance of one of the greatest authors of the 20th century but also on the enduring relevance of myth in today's world. The epic tale of The Lord of the Rings (1954-55) was a multi-layered imaginative explosion - anthropological, linguistic, even geographical - that continues to resonate today in evident artistic, cultural, and commercial ways.
These continuous echoes invite us both to examine the various forms that this resonance takes and to closely consider its meaning: to ask ourselves why these mythological tales continue to connect with us on a spiritual level and, far from being mere tools of escapism, lead us to delve deeper and discover new dimensions, depths, and riches in the lives we lead."
