Course overview
Prerequisites:
The student can access this level either if he/she has completed the appropriate first level course organized by the Polis Institute in Rome or if he/she has successfully passed the placement test during the first day of the Summer course.
Level 2 is for students with an elementary knowledge of Latin grammar and a background of at least 500 words of common vocabulary.
Objective:
Introduction to Classical Latin. The course will give the student a broad understanding of the basic morphology of Latin (case system, verb system and basic vocabulary) with the goal of being able to hold a basic conversation as well as to read and understand simple texts in Latin without translating.
Course topics:
All five nominal declensions
All 7 cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, ablative, vocative, locative)
All types of adjectives (including i stems)
System of present tense, active and passive: indicative, imperative, infinitive (all conjugations)
System of the perfect tense active: indicative, infinitive (all conjugations)
System of future tense active: indicative (all conjugations)
Pronouns (qui, quis, hic, ille, iste, is)
Oratio obliqua with present and perfect tense
Class Format:
Polis method: Full immersion with use of various comprehensible input (CI) techniques, such as total physical response (TPR), participative storytelling (TPRS), and more.
