Doctorate

The third cycle, lasting no less than two years, is specifically designed for students who want to dedicate themselves to scientific research and university teaching. The students must attend monographic courses established by the Faculty based on his curriculum and prepare a doctoral thesis under the direction of a professor.

Conditions for admission to third cycle studies (doctorate)

a) In order to be admitted to the third cycle, the student must possess a License degree in Canon Law, achieved with the minimum grade of Magna cum laude in the License final exam and as average in the fundamental courses.

b) The student must also receive the favorable opinion of the Faculty Committee, which will examine her/his CV, taking particular account on the research skills demonstrated during the License, and will evaluate the admission.

c) The student must reside in Rome, at least for the first academic year of the Doctoral studies and is required to attend the activities that will be indicated to her/him on the bulletin board.

d) If they have not done so previously, candidates whose mother tongue is not Italian must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of Italian language

Rules for preparing the Doctoral Thesis

a) For the approval of the thesis, the student must address a request to the Dean of the Faculty within November 29th, indicating the chosen topic and a supervisor. The candidate must pay the academic fees in four installments in accordance with the deadlines set and detailed in the ACADEMIC FEES table. Furthermore, he must present a scheme of the work approved by the supervisor. The approval of the thesis is valid for three years; after this period, student have to ask for annual renewal.

b) Once the thesis has been edited, the student delivers a copy to the Academic Secretariat with the approval of the supervisor. This is sent to a co-supervisor, appointed by the Faculty, who makes his observations within 15 working days

c) The student, after taking into account the observations of the co-supervisor, deposits seven bound copies of the thesis in the Academic Secretariat, with the supervisor's signature on the title page and the payment receipt of the required fee. The Academic Secretariat, after affixing the University stamp on the first page of each volume, returns one to the student.

d) The student will discuss the thesis in a public session with a commission of teachers. The period for this exam runs from October to June of each academic year. For example, in order to discuss the thesis in June, it must be submitted within April 24th. The Academic Secretariat communicates the date and time of the session, which takes place no earlier than 20 days and no later than the fortieth day from the delivery of the thesis, unless the student requests a different deadline.

Third Cycle (Doctorate) Monographic Courses

Students regularly enrolled in the second year of the “Studio Rotale” are not required to attend the monographic courses mentioned above.

Supplementary courses are provided for students coming from other faculties.

Students who want to attend, as monographic courses of the Doctorate, also courses or seminars of the License not previously attended, or Doctorate courses of other Faculties of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, or of other Roman Faculties, must address a reasoned request to the Dean of the Faculty within October 31st.
