Judith Kovacs (1945-2020), was a professor at the University of Virginia. She was a philologist, exegete, and devoted herself to biblical as well as patristic studies; always striving for a theological understanding of texts. Judith was driven by a great love for Christian revelation and Church tradition, which was expressed through her authentic, open dialogue and ecumenism. This passion led her to always promote the works of her interlocutors and, in particular, young researchers. Those who met Judith were always struck by her ability to ask daring questions, which always stemmed from a deep curiosity about God and man's salvation.

The Judith Kovacs Scholarship has been established to honour her intellectual legacy. Its aim is to promote a two-year call for proposals to support theological research. It is available for women who wish to pursue a doctorate at the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome.

Those interested in applying will need to enter a selection process. It is necessary applicants present the following: an ecclesiastical licenze, a motivation letter and a cover letter from their future thesis director. They must also be a resident in Rome for at least one academic year. The successful candidate will be financed for the entire doctorate enrolment fees until the discussion of the thesis, within five years of enrolment.

The jury awarding the grant is composed of members of the Relational Ontology Research Group (ROR) as well as two external members, selected for their expertise in these areas of study. The jury will be tasked in drawing up the ranking list and communicating the results of the competition to the winner. After this process, the same committee will confirm the award of the grant for the year, following the first, after interviewing the winner on the progress of their research.

The Judith Kovacs scholarship can be combined with other bursaries in order to cover all, or part, of the cost of accommodation and meals in Rome; as well as research trips during the period of writing the thesis.
