School of Philosophy

Understanding in context, in the heart of Rome

The School of Philosophy promotes contextual mediation between the fields of learning, between different cultures, and between reason and faith. With openness to theology, the School favors the understanding of the metaphysical dimension of truth and of the anthropological and historical, cultural context.

We offer the foundations for understanding the crucial issues, whether current or perennial, to address the questions posed by scientific discovery and cultural change. The philosophical thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas, read in the light of the encyclical Fides et Ratio, roots our common tradition.

Our teaching style develops capability for critical thought, methodological accuracy, and intellectual responsibility:

  • Systematic and organic formation in the fundamental areas of Philosophy;
  • Direct contact with authors and their great philosophical works;
  • Deepening appreciation for the metaphysical and anthropological dimensions of the classical tradition.

In a context:

  • Of study and collaboration between professors and students: with an individualized tutorial approach and a dedicated teacher to guide each student;
  • With a library among the most complete for the study of Philosophy;
  • Universal, characterized by closeness to the See of Peter;
  • Open to the needs of local Churches, with a diverse community of students coming from the whole world.

In evidenza

Volume 11/2025 of Forum. Supplement to Acta Philosophica has been published, corresponding to the academic year 2024–2025. It primarily gathers a series of contributions from the School of Philosophy’s annual academic conference, entitled Perspectives on Altruism: Empathy, Compassion, Care.

The Studies and Seminars section includes three contributions linked to various activities held over recent academic years. Fabrizio Amerini offers a reflection on the notion of the “master” and its development during the medieval period, focusing mainly on Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. Aldo Vendemiati, drawing from a seminar held at the School of Canon Law, examines the different meanings attributed to the notion of natural law in the transition from the classical and Christian conception to that of the modern age. Manuela Moretti explores the feminine roots of María Zambrano’s philosophy, focusing on the maternal bond and its significance within a thought that shifts attention from mortality to birth.

Rome, October 6, 2025

Dear students, faculty, staff, and alumni,

As we embark on this new academic year, my first thought is one of profound gratitude to the Lord for the celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of our University. These have been intense and emotionally rich months: the photographic exhibition allowed us to relive, year by year, the moments that have marked our history - from our origins in 1984 to the audience with the late Pope Francis in 2023; the shared choice of our new institutional motto, Omnes traham ad meipsum, has provided a luminous synthesis of our mission for the future; and finally, the tribute to the "pioneers" has shown us with gratitude the human and spiritual roots from which everything began.

On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the inauguration ceremony for the new academic year 2025/26 was held. On that occasion, four Honorary Doctorates were conferred by the various Schools.
