Understanding in context, in the heart of Rome

The School of Philosophy promotes contextual mediation between the fields of learning, between different cultures, and between reason and faith. With openness to theology, the School favors the understanding of the metaphysical dimension of truth and of the anthropological and historical, cultural context.

We offer the foundations for understanding the crucial issues, whether current or perennial, to address the questions posed by scientific discovery and cultural change. The philosophical thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas, read in the light of the encyclical Fides et Ratio, roots our common tradition.

Our teaching style develops capability for critical thought, methodological accuracy, and intellectual responsibility:

  • Systematic and organic formation in the fundamental areas of Philosophy;
  • Direct contact with authors and their great philosophical works;
  • Deepening appreciation for the metaphysical and anthropological dimensions of the classical tradition.

In a context:

  • Of study and collaboration between professors and students: with an individualized tutorial approach and a dedicated teacher to guide each student;
  • With a library among the most complete for the study of Philosophy;
  • Universal, characterized by closeness to the See of Peter;
  • Open to the needs of local Churches, with a diverse community of students coming from the whole world.

Giornata di benvenuto ai nuovi studenti

On Monday, October 7, 2024, in the presence of the Secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, Bishop Giovanni Cesare Pagazzi, and the Prelate of Opus Dei and Grand Chancellor of the University, Mons. Fernando Ocáriz, the inauguration ceremony of the 2024/2025 academic year took place, marking the 40th year of activity for the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.

The ceremony began with the celebration of the Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit at the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare, the University's chapel, presided over by Bishop Pagazzi.

Following this, the solemn Academic Act took place in the Aula Magna, with the inaugural lecture given by the Secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education on the theme The University as a Home of Study, followed by inaugural addresses from the Rector Magnificus, Rev. Prof. Fernando Puig, and the Grand Chancellor.

The Academic Act was broadcast via livestream at the following link.

On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, the academic community participated in the inauguration ceremony of the new Rector, Rev. Prof. Fernando Puig.

The event was presided over by the Vice Grand Chancellor of the University, Monsignor Mariano Fazio, who also welcomed the professors who will assume new positions: Rev. Prof. Giulio Maspero (Dean of Theology), Rev. Prof. Thierry Sol (Dean of Canon Law), Rev. Prof. Giovanni Zaccaria (Vice-Rector), and Prof. Carla Rossi Espagnet (Director of ISSR at Apollinare).

The outgoing Rector, Don Luis Navarro, thanked the academic community for the support received during his eight-year term, also recalling the progress made by Santa Croce during this time.

“A new generation's work begins,” said the new Rector Puig. He then thanked his predecessor and all those who, over the years, contributed to his spiritual, human, and professional growth. “We have a great responsibility, but we also have great protectors and intercessors: St. John Paul II, St. Josemaría Escrivá, and Blessed Álvaro del Portillo: we are not alone.”

The first inaugural event of the new Rector, marking the 40th anniversary of the University, is scheduled for Monday, October 7.
