Standards for writing the Licence thesis
Each student in the Second Cycle must prepare a Licence Dissertation that demonstrates their skills in research work.
The thesis theme is chosen by the student under the guidance of one of the Faculty's lecturers. By the end of the second semester of the first year, the student must apply to the Dean of the Faculty for approval of the theme, indicating the chosen theme and the supervisor (the appropriate form can be obtained from the Secretariat or downloaded here); for students who have completed the first year of the Licence in another teaching centre, the deadline for submitting the application is 30 November.
The thesis should be between 100,000 and 150,000 characters long (including spaces and all parts of the thesis: corresponds to approximately 40-60 pages in A4 format, 12pt, line spacing 1.5).
Four bound copies of the thesis, with the supervisor's signature on the first page, must be delivered to the Academic Secretariat by the dates indicated in the academic calendar. The Academic Secretariat will stamp the University on the first page of each copy and return one to the student.
The Licence thesis will be assessed by two professors, one of whom will be the same supervisor.
Esame di grado di Licenza specializzata
After the discussion of the Licentiate thesis, the student must sit an examination which concludes the studies of the Second Cycle and confers the degree of Licentiate specialising in Philosophy.
The examination, consisting of an oral test in Italian, focuses on a list of topics representing a synthesis of the student's philosophical specialisation.
The student registers for the Licence examination upon delivery to the Academic Secretariat of the four copies of the Licence thesis.
The final grade for the specialised Licence degree is determined by the weighted average of the examinations taken, including the Licence thesis and the degree examination.
