Filosofia

Understanding in context, in the heart of Rome

The School of Philosophy promotes contextual mediation between the fields of learning, between different cultures, and between reason and faith. With openness to theology, the School favors the understanding of the metaphysical dimension of truth and of the anthropological and historical, cultural context.

We offer the foundations for understanding the crucial issues, whether current or perennial, to address the questions posed by scientific discovery and cultural change. The philosophical thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas, read in the light of the encyclical Fides et Ratio, roots our common tradition.

Our teaching style develops capability for critical thought, methodological accuracy, and intellectual responsibility:

  • Systematic and organic formation in the fundamental areas of Philosophy;
  • Direct contact with authors and their great philosophical works;
  • Deepening appreciation for the metaphysical and anthropological dimensions of the classical tradition.

In a context:

  • Of study and collaboration between professors and students: with an individualized tutorial approach and a dedicated teacher to guide each student;
  • With a library among the most complete for the study of Philosophy;
  • Universal, characterized by closeness to the See of Peter;
  • Open to the needs of local Churches, with a diverse community of students coming from the whole world.

Festa dell'Università - Incontro con la dott.ssa Mariolina Ceriotti Migliarese

A wind duet welcomed guests as they entered the Aula Magna. The musicians were Gregorio Donoso (a student in the School of Theology) and Benedikt Aicher (a student in the School of Philosophy).

After the rector, Luis Navarro, gave his welcome address, a video on the life of Fr. Álvaro was shown. It included scenes from his early years working with the founder of Opus Dei and the day of his beatification in Madrid, September 27, 2014.

On Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, in the Vatican’s Paul VI Audience Hall, the Holy Father Pope Francis will be welcoming an audience of the academic pontifical university and institutional communities present in Rome, made up of about 16,000 students from 120 countries on five continents.

The event, whose theme will be "Forming Ourselves Together to Evangelize," is promoted by the Conference of Rectors of Roman Pontifical Universities and Institutions (CRUIPRO)—of which Rev. Luis Navarro, Rector of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, is president—as well as by the association that brings together student representatives from the 22 institutions involved.

A public presentation took place on Wednesday 18 January 2023 (3.30 pm, Aula Álvaro del Portillo) on the occasion of the new edition of Josef Pieper's book, Elogio della filosofia, published by Ares.
