Understanding in context, in the heart of Rome

The School of Philosophy promotes contextual mediation between the fields of learning, between different cultures, and between reason and faith. With openness to theology, the School favors the understanding of the metaphysical dimension of truth and of the anthropological and historical, cultural context.

Events 2024-25   Faculty Flyer    Study Plan 2024-25

We offer the foundations for understanding the crucial issues, whether current or perennial, to address the questions posed by scientific discovery and cultural change. The philosophical thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas, read in the light of the encyclical Fides et Ratio, roots our common tradition.

Our teaching style develops capability for critical thought, methodological accuracy, and intellectual responsibility:

  • Systematic and organic formation in the fundamental areas of Philosophy;
  • Direct contact with authors and their great philosophical works;
  • Deepening appreciation for the metaphysical and anthropological dimensions of the classical tradition.

In a context:

  • Of study and collaboration between professors and students: with an individualized tutorial approach and a dedicated teacher to guide each student;
  • With a library among the most complete for the study of Philosophy;
  • Universal, characterized by closeness to the See of Peter;
  • Open to the needs of local Churches, with a diverse community of students coming from the whole world.

Doctoral and Specialized Master's students enrolled in the School of Philosophy are invited to submit an academic paper for the XXV World Congress of Philosophy, to be held at the University "La Sapienza" in Rome from August 1 to 8, 2024.

The Schools of Philosophy of five Pontifical Universities (Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum, Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Pontifical Gregorian University, Pontifical Lateran University, and Pontifical Urban University) have jointly issued a Call for Projects. This call aims to select noteworthy papers, and the selected authors will have their congress registration fees covered.

Submissions, which will be evaluated by an inter-university committee comprising representatives from the participating institutions, must be sent by March 15, 2024. Papers can be written in one of the official languages of the Congress used in Roman Universities (French, English, Italian, Spanish, German), following the Guidelines of the World Congress.

From January 21 to 25, 2024, at the Bonus Pastor, the Research Center DISF and the School of Philosophy of our University organized a seminar titled Creativity: Innovation, Transmission, and Motivation in Animals, Humans, and Societies.

The event, with participants from various fields of study - from theology to sociology, from archaeology to economics - addressed the two crucial dimensions for investigating creativity: the social and the environmental. Attention was also focused on cultural transmission strategies as a key element for the emergence of innovations. Finally, the theme of language and its role in creativity was explored.

There were 5 speakers who discussed these topics: Francesco d’Errico (CNRS Bordeaux, France), Niels H. Gregersen (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), Sheina Lew-Levy (Durham University, United Kingdom), Pietro Montani (Sapienza University of Rome), and Michael Muthukrishna (London School of Economics, United Kingdom).

On Friday, January 26, 2024, our University hosted a group of 48 students from a French classical high school in Andorra who made a stop in Rome during an organized trip around Italy.

The Ambassador of Andorra to the Holy See suggested that the students undertake a special visit to our institution, which welcomed them with enthusiasm and hospitality.

In a specially arranged meeting, the students had the opportunity to get a close look at our academic reality. Professor Arasa, Dean of the School of Communication, and professor Luise, Vice Dean of the School of Philosophy, spoke to the students about our University's connection with the Holy See and Rome. Professor Petagine reflected with the students on the importance of humanistic studies for personal development, and a playful Latin session with professor Pirrone concluded the day.

The visit was enriching not only from an academic perspective but also from a cultural standpoint, providing students with a unique opportunity to explore the rich historical and artistic heritage of Rome.

This year as well, the Embassy of France to the Holy See and the Pious Establishments of France in Rome and Loreto are offering 50 scholarships for the French language.

The initiative includes a one-month stay (July or August) in Paris, at the Institut Catholique.

The call is open to students of any nationality - priests and seminarians, nuns and monks, laymen and laywomen - who wish to enhance their proficiency in French for their study projects, research work, professional or pastoral endeavors. The minimum required French proficiency level is A2.

Applications are open until February 25th.
